Polycapture, a Versatile Recording Tool for Mac

Imagine hosting a podcast or screenshare recording and needing to capture every detail—audio, screen, multiple camera angles—all at once. That’s where PolyCapture steps in. Designed for Mac, this powerful tool seamlessly records everything you need in real time, making it ideal for content creators, educators, and professionals alike. It’s more than just a screen recorder; PolyCapture is built to capture every angle, every voice, and every screen, turning complex recording setups into a single, streamlined experience.

Whether you need to record individually or simultaneously, PolyCapture provides the flexibility needed for various projects.

Features That Stand Out

PolyCapture offers flexible screen recording options that include capturing entire screens or specific areas, all while maintaining good quality without noticeable lag. The app provides smooth video and audio synchronization, making it reliable for various use cases. Setting up a session is straightforward and can include the built-in webcam, a selected screen portion, system audio, and the microphone. Adding an iPhone via Continuity Camera integration is also seamless, enhancing the app’s versatility.

A standout feature of PolyCapture is its real-time app exclusion, which keeps notifications and distractions out of recordings. This is particularly beneficial for those who need polished, interruption-free results. Which works really well and is a game changer for blocking on apps like Safari and 1Password.

Additionally, the app supports recording from multiple sources, including webcams, capture cards, and iOS devices, making it suitable for tutorials, video podcasts, and gaming content. The resulting recordings are saved as separate files, which simplifies post-production editing.

PolyCapture also excels in audio recording, supporting voiceovers and other sound needs with clear output. The integration of macOS’s Voice Isolation feature helps reduce background noise, enhancing the quality of spoken content. Recorded audio files are compatible with popular editing tools, making them convenient for further processing.

Strengths and Considerations

PolyCapture’s ease of use, fast processing, and offline recording provide convenience and privacy. The interface is straightforward, making it accessible for users who don’t want to spend time navigating complicated menus. The app’s freemium model allows users to make recordings up to three minutes long for free, with a low-cost in-app purchase of €4 ($3.99 USD) unlocking unlimited recording lengths.

However, the app’s extensive features may feel overwhelming for beginners who are new to multi-source recording. Additionally, while the app is effective, users looking for highly advanced editing capabilities might find it limited. We were also sad to see no way to preview or scrub through recordings in there recording view which made it cumbersome to use in our workflow.

One user noted disappointment at the lack of an option to embed screen audio directly into the video, which could be a limitation for some workflows. While PolyCapture focuses on core recording features, those who need embedded audio may need to seek additional tools. For comparison, free software like OBS does offer embedded audio recording, though it comes with a steeper learning curve.

A Look at the UI/UX

PolyCapture’s design aims for a clean and functional approach, offering intuitive controls and accessible features. While the menu bar integration and preview windows make it simple to check and manage recordings, we weren’t fans of the skeuomorphic design, which feels a bit dated. Some parts of the interface, like the countdown timer and elements in the menu bar, are almost unreadable, making usability challenging in these areas and requiring a bit of patience

Real-World Performance

In practical use, PolyCapture performs well for most common recording tasks, from tutorials to content creation. The app runs smoothly, providing consistent results without major hiccups. Lack of screen audio recording has been addressed by the developer and is on the roadmap. While extensive user feedback will offer a fuller picture, initial experiences indicate that PolyCapture handles typical recording demands efficiently.
